PC Parts and Advice Thread - ken66 - 03-11-2012

I though we could do with an advice thread for computer components so we can share the love.

Thanks to the advice of Lee and Keefa, I've just received my new Radeon HD6870 graphics card today and it's huge, not sure it'll fit in my DS Wink Have to wait for the new power supply to arrive before I fit it Sad

I was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding SSD drives; anything to look for specifically. I have a 2TB hard drive so I was thinking of one of the following just to run Windows and programs:

I know they're in French but if you know about this stuff you'll understand Thup

Actually another question:

I have a pc with a faulty integrated graphics card so the monitors sleeps every time I boot it. I have added a dedicated nvidia card, but is there a way I can add the drivers without a screen showing?

Not quite sure I understand what you are trying to ask Ken. To me it seems as if you are trying to install a driver without actually seeing what you are doing on the screen

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - JP - 04-11-2012

That was how I read it.

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - kin_lin - 04-11-2012

Agreed, very difficult. Replacing the motherboard may be the easiest option.

That's exactly what I meant Lee. I added the old hard drive into my new pc and the old graphics card too. Then I tried to install the correct drivers to the old hard drive in windows/system32/drivers. Then I put the card and the hard drive back into the older pc and nothing. Does anyone know if that was the correct destination folder?

So does that mean it's possible Kin?

Possible, but you would need to know the entire boot up sequence and installation sequence for you dedicated graphics card by heart and basically do it blind. Hence, why I said it may be easier to just get a new motherboard.

Ken, can I put all my PC support requests in here Wink

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - ken66 - 05-11-2012

Yes I don't see why not Thup

Then it will become the top thread for posts Tongue

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - Trikstahz - 10-11-2012

My laptop cannot play through one FM game without overheating, I'm not great at taking things apart, so i was wondering what should I do?

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - WilliamMcBeard - 10-11-2012

Make sure the air supply is good (i.e not on soft furnishings, and b) make sure the hardware isn't at it's max just to get through a game of FM!

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - kin_lin - 10-11-2012

Get a cooling pad for it

With my old Dell Pentium 4 Mobile, I actually had to take the RAM cover off while it was sitting on a cooling pad to get enough airflow through the laptop while playing FM10.

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - Trikstahz - 11-11-2012

Cheers Will/Kin

I got a cooling pad already KL, the problem is when i used it, it still overheated my laptop eventually. after like 2 games. :/

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - kin_lin - 11-11-2012

Ok, then try playing matches in 2D or alternatively get a new laptop.

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - keefa - 11-11-2012

Unfortunately it sounds as though the cooling fan in your system has given up the ghost. I had to replace the heatsink in my mums Vaio last year because of just that.

It really isn't too bad to do.

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - Trikstahz - 11-11-2012

I think you're onto something Keefa. lauched and created a new game on FM as a random team as a test, I let it sit for 5 minutse, and a lot of the areas around the fan were absolutely boiling. so is the place where the dust would normally blow out of is boiling too. how much would it set me back if I am to get the pieces replaced?

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - keefa - 11-11-2012

It all depends really, what model is your laptop? I think I replaced my mums for about £50 (including thermal paste).

Post the make and model here and I'll see if I can find you some prices and maybe even a video of how to change it Thup

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - Trikstahz - 11-11-2012

laptop is Acer Aspire 5750G.

Thanks Keefs, I appreciate it Thup

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - WilliamMcBeard - 11-11-2012

Core i3 and Nvidia chipset? Why is it struggling?!

RE: PC Parts and Advice Thread - keefa - 11-11-2012

Have a look at this, Chris.

and a replacement fan looks to be about a tenner Thup
