Reading FC - Football League Championship, 2026/27 Part Two

Picking up the reigns of a club with players worth 7 figures was a strange experience after the shite I've dealt with so far. However this team was awful. Not in terms of the playing staff. They just would not - or could not? - apply themselves.

Very few leaders amongst them, none of them good enough for a starting berth either, on the wrong side of 35... I managed 4 wins in 4 months, one of them being in the FA Cup. It was painful. Lost almost every other game, drawing 4. We managed to scrape survival by 2 points because we were less shit than the bottom 3, not because we were better. Next season will be a massive struggle if they don't get their shit together. I've already been massively hampered by a takeover saga that's dragged on through all of May and into June, stopping me doing any early business. Apparently the potential new owners want their own man, too...

In other news, Cambridge made it to the playoff final before losing 2-1 in extra time to Mansfield. :Sad

We made it to FACR4, but lost a replay to Bournemouth.

It's all about mental strength though here. We conceded a lot of late goals, even in games where we scored late ourselves. Best example - we took the lead against top of the table Swansea with 2 minutes to go, 1 minute to go and it's level. Ridiculous. No fight whatsoever in this squad. Part of me hopes I get turfed out.

Ah I got sacked because I didn't deny links to another job when asked if I'd be interested. Lol

Incredibly that's my first sacking of this save. Everywhere else has been resignations (though to be fair one of them was "fuck off or we'll sack you").

Well, despite the sacking, you have moved up from the national leagues to the Championship. Land the right job next and you could soon find yourself in the Premier League. KUTGProgress!

Sheffield United - Football League One, 2027/28

Didn't take me too long to find another job, United had given yet another manager the boot after finishing in 18th the year just gone. They only wanted top half for the coming season so I saw it as a good platform to build on, if I met expectations of course. Major transfers in were Owl on a free, Yogi back on loan again from Derby and a young striker from Tranmere. Also brought in a high potential young left back from Reading and a random free agent Irish keeper who turned out to be quality, as well as another random Irishman as his backup during an injury crisis.

Anyway. As for the football. Bit of a shaky start, only winning 2 of the opening 5. After that, I scrapped what I was trying to do and went back to what I'd had success with before, and we were flying. Shot up the table right into the playoff pack and aside from a few weeks hanging around in 7th, we never dropped out. At more than one stage we were looking at the realistic prospect of catching the top 2, but in the end they ran away with automatic promotion. The football wasn't pretty but it was effective and exciting to watch. The highlight of the regular season was beating Wednesday 3-0 at our place, Owl scoring twice.

Nearing the end of the season and Wednesday - they rejected me, as it happens, expecting a former West Ham star to take them to the title - who had at Christmas sacked their manager came roaring back into contention and with 3 weeks remaining forced their way into the top 6. I did end up finishing below them thanks to another late implosion, annoyingly, however I was hopeful of a Steel City Derby at Wembley. Unfortunately it wasn't to be as they were annihilated to the tune of 5-0 by Shrewsbury despite a 1-0 win at home. We drew with Wigan in South Yorkshire before Yogi took it on himself to force the issue and his hat trick, along with a brace from Owl and a goal from my strong raiding midfielder put us into the final.

Not much to shout about in the final really. Yogi scored early on, we held the lead until the hour mark where we doubled our lead and Owl rounded off the scoring 3 minutes later. 3-0 win and up we go. Very unexpected. I'm loved right now - ha. That'll soon change I bet...

Cups didn't suck arse. League Cup, less said the better. Football League Trophy saw us crash out of the groups, though I didn't give a fuck about that one.

FA Cup was fantastic. We made it all the way to the quarter final stage, beating both Manchester City (we beat City emphatically, 3-1 win at the Etihad) and Manchester United (another strong win in Manchester) along the way before West Ham proved too much for us.

I was linked with the Rangers job over the early summer weeks, and I did apply, but they decided against interviewing me. Never know, I may end up sticking around for a while...

Sheffield United - Football League Championship, 2028/19

I knew there was some major surgery to be done in some areas of the team - for example, I had no specialist right back - but I think I went a little overboard with the transfer activity, bringing in 13 players... Though in my defence some of these were loanees I'd made permanent signings, so in reality it was about 7 new players. Some of them turned out to be absolute shite, best example being a Spanish centre half who was nowhere near as good as my scouts reckoned and got sent back to Spain at a £100k loss in January.

As for the football. We got off to a brilliant start, out there with the early title chasers and even leading the way for a couple of months. Then we came up against Derby, 2nd place at the time. They inflicted our first major defeat of the league campaign, and while it was early to say we never recovered, we lost top spot and never regained it. Though we did hang about in the playoff pack for a very long time.

In January, I brought in some new faces (more strikers... big mistake) and ended up overloading certain positions, so I had to ship a few out on loan. I did however manage to bring in a fantastic Irish prospect who'll go on to do well I think along with a couple of players from Rangers who I expected to make an impact. They didn't. To be honest the signs were there as early as October (can't stress enough how amazing our start was) when we lost 3 on the spin, conceding 11 goals.

After Christmas the wheels completely came off. Only 1 win and only 7 in total that we didn't lose in 2029. I was approached by Leeds who were struggling in 21st late in January, but I thought to myself I was going to be in a playoff race so I'd better leave it even with the transfer money on offer. I wish I'd taken it. We finished 19th, 2 points above Leeds and only 4 above the drop. I'd have snapped your hand off if I was offered this in August, but after thinking we'd be in the mix, I was very disappointed. Owl still got 22 goals this season despite missing a fair chunk through injury, which is becoming a bit of a concern.

Cups sucked arse. Out to Derby in League Cup round 2, Sunderland doing the same to us in FACR3.

Don't really want to be here anymore as I think the players aren't responding to me anymore but unsure I'll be able to do much better just yet.

Sheffield United - Football League Championship, 2029/30

Not too much business really. Major signings - a striker from Japan, midfielder from Norwich for £1m, about it really. Irish centre half who I've managed for years was shipped out in January as he wasn't getting game time and I shipped random players out on loan including a quality striker who I knew wouldn't get game time - turned out to be a huge mistake as he scored 21 goals.

Anyway. Nothing like the runaway start of last season. We struggled to get going, never in the bottom 3 but never far above it. We just trundled along really, lower midtable fodder. This never changed until around March when we began flirting with the relegation zone, dropping into the bottom 3 for a week. Then we beat Rotherham and we went into a great run of form that took us up to 17th at one point. The aim then was to finish above Wednesday in 16th, who weren't exactly setting the world alight.

We lost in the second Steel City Derby (drew the first) and that put them out of realistic reach. With 3 games remaining, 3 points taken from these games left us 18th. Small progress, at least.

Cups sucked arse.

I won't be here next season I don't think. Far too many run ins with the board and they won't give me the backing to take the club further. Though I'm not sure anyone is arsed anymore so not sure there's any point continuing the thread. Lol
