Board only wants me to survive - though they said that last year!

My game must be borked if I'm doing this well though. Lol

I clearly massively overachieved with Stockport (and/or they were massively overreliant on Cider) as they finished 22nd last year and they're in the bottom two just now.

Doncaster Rovers - Football League Championship, 2023/24

I was actually interviewed by both Sheffield United and West Ham United over the summer, so I managed to extort some money out of the board with which to enhance the squad in exchange for staying. That in mind, I also managed to flog a few people who wouldn't make the step up. Biggest signings were a young keeper on loan and a few kids I managed to sign on the cheap that actually featured quite heavily. One of these was meant to be an upgrade on Clown, who wasn't meant to be good enough, but this guy turned out to be a massive fraud.

Clown actually scored the first goal of the season in all divisions, and we were riding high for the first few months of the season. Surely I couldn't, could I? No. Wheels fell off a bit - but not as much as I expected. October saw just two points added to our tally which did worry me a little but we'd gotten off to such a good start that it was relatively harmless. Christmas time came round with the team still sitting comfortably in mid table, so I decided to push the boat out - in came three Tunisian youngsters, all with a lot of potential and already ready to start. I tried to sign a fourth who was even better but he considered himself far too good for us (and rightly so, really). Dickhead ended up in MLS. Clown went out on loan, I think never to be seen again as his contract is up. Also signed a fucking retard of a goalkeeper and sent the loanee back, which was an error, and brought in a Spanish central defender from Brentford

We just kept chugging along really and adding points on the board here and there, never really troubling the top half again after a good start but never was I really looking over my shoulder. Cider did go on a worrying goal drought of over 10 hours, but he scored 23 and came 2nd in the scoring chart in the league which was excellent. This kid is going to be unreal when he's finished. My Tunisians mostly turned out well as well. The striker was hit and miss but he's young in a new country, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I finished a very creditable 15th in the end, so we more than held our own, and but for my fucking imbecile of a goalkeeper could have finished higher.

The FA Cup saw us dumped out by Arsenal at the first attempt, but we made it to Round 4 of the League Cup, where Watford gave us a proper doing over.

I keep being interviewed by bigger clubs, so not sure if I'll be staying around for much longer. The club has also gone quite deep into the red, so we'll have to see how that pans out as well. But the squad is very strong, relatively speaking, and even if I have to sell a few to balance the books I have confidence that I can make it work.

In other news, Stockport managed to claw their way out of trouble - only to collapse at the death. They needed to outscore and outperform Crewe on the final day of the season. Crewe drew and County won - but they fell short by a single goal. Gutting for them to slide back into non-league on the last day.

Well it would have been a step backwards had you gone to either of those clubs, so good decision to stay.

Nice to see you being optimistic about selling to balance the books, is this purely a love of the club thing? Mrgreen

Regardless, excellent work, keep it up Thup

Absolutely is. If this was a random crock of shite I couldn't care about I'd spend my way into oblivion, King of the Jungle 2018 style, and be out the door the second the shit hit the fan. Mrgreen

Doncaster Rovers - Football League Championship, 2024/25

[size=small]Again, had a few interviews at bigger clubs - Scottish champions Rangers wanted me to drop in, the biggest name of all - so I managed to draw a bit of extra cash from the board. I used this money to go and sign a couple more Tunisians. The ones from last year were also going to play important roles in the coming season. I also brought in a few other players in positions I felt we were light for not a lot of money - most of these guys should be able to at least make a decent fist of stepping up if it comes to it... :Smile kind of had to go up this year because I'd pissed away so much money and while clubs did put in offers for some of my better players, none of them were anything like acceptable.

So, the football. We were never out of the running for the playoffs, to cut a long story short. We had a wobble just after Christmas where we bottled a 2-0 lead that would've sent us into 2nd and ended up dropping as low as 9th at the end of that particular run of form, but we never lost touch with the top six. We shat out goals, at both ends unfortunately, but I had several players in the running for the golden boot award. I also managed to get shut of some trouble makers after Christmas, which was nice.

We were absolutely rampant and we went into the final day of the season with an outside chance of 2nd and automatic promotion, only needing one result to go our way if we beat West Ham - the team in 2nd place. We needed a four goal margin, which everybody laughed off really as the Hammers were heavy favourites. Remember when I said we shat out goals? well, we did our bit. We took the lead 5 minutes in, and while West Ham did equalise a minute later, we went on to win 7-2 at the London Stadium. Unfortunately, the one result we needed elsewhere didn't come along. Reading had to lose, massive GD in mind, but they went and won. Ah well. 3rd wasn't bad, considering I was predicted 17th!

In the playoffs we faced Stoke who we'd not beaten this season, and actually lost 4-1 to in the second game in the league. Lovely. We conceded in the 8th minute, however this was ruled out for offside. Bit of a scare there. Dragon (random Romanian striker I'd picked up on a free) went and opened the scoring on 32 minutes, and Stoke struck back five minutes later but Cider restored the lead before the break. It lasted three minutes... Another goal on the hour mark along with their keeper doing a retarded thing leaving us to tap in a fourth and Cider completing his hat trick in stoppage time saw us run out 5-2 winners at the Bet365 and one foot in the final. The home leg was shite. We scored early on but then Dragon got sent off, so he'll miss the final. Stoke pulled a couple of goals back in the second half as well which left me worried about total collapse as I'd given our #1 a game off to recover from a minor injury. We equalised on 71 minutes and Stoke regained the lead ten minutes later but that was it really. Wank game. Preston awaited.

In the opening exchanges, we were well on top, however we didn't break the deadlock until 30 minutes. Cider played an inch perfect cross to one of the Tunisian strikers and he fired into the top corner. He added his second less than a minute later. A PNE goal came 10 minutes after the break which put us under a bit of pressure,  but one of the other Tunisians (I really need to name them) added to our lead before Cider made it 4-1. Tunisian Defender scored a fabulous free kick in the dying minutes to make it 5-1, and while Preston doubled their tally moments later it meant fuck all. Ultimately, what this meant was that Doncaster Rovers would be playing top flight football for the very first time. Time to see if my all-action style of play would cut it against the best...

In the cups, Fulham put us out of the League Cup in round 4, Arsenal killing us off in FACR3.

Cider won the golden boot, Dragon finished 3rd in that race despite playing most of his games on the wing, and one of the Tunisians I'd signed in January scored 15 in half a season! Next year, I know I'll need to upgrade a few players, but my Tunisians are coming along nicely and they're edging towards homegrown status too. I definitely need a new keeper, though I altered my approach slightly to try and keep him less exposed so he couldn't do retarded shit, and in fairness to the lad he did improve massively as games went by.

At least it's a realistic scenario, gambling the future of the club for a chance to get into the Premier League.

Doncaster Rovers - Premier League, 2025/26

Okay so, I had a feeling we were in for a tough season. I immediately replaced fucktard keeper, and brought in reinforcements across the board. Biggest signing was probably my keeper (who I ended up replacing again in January with a bigger signing) followed by a Spanish centre half and a former Liverpool attacking midfielder.

Cider never really got going, which was hugely disappointing. We struggled for points and in fact lost every single one of the first nine games. We were never properly cut adrift but I was very concerned at this point and had to have a total rethink about how I was going to approach the division. Then we won five of the next six, a 5-0 defeat to the Leeds scum breaking the streak in the middle and a famous victory at Old Trafford being the last. We lost every game in January despite seven new signings having to come in due to players breaking or being shite, which forced another rethink. In the end, we Wigan'd our way over the line really. Absolutely dire for months and months, then shithoused enough points to get us to safety at the death. We only actually took 17 points after Christmas and only had a total of 35 (Leicester finished 18th on 34 with a much better GD) so it was properly shithouse territory that we even survived. It was our record high, bearing in mind Doncaster have never finished above 7th in the second tier (well it was 12th back then with the top division having more teams at the time).

I did think we'd fucked it many a time especially when we threw away leads on the run in, but we pulled ourselves above the waterline with a game to go, and although we got fucked to the tune of 4-0 at the Etihad, Leicester were pumped at home to Chelsea meaning we survived.

One of my Tunisians finished 2nd in the scoring charts with 21 which is amazing considering how we played and where we finished. The rest of them also stepped up well, though I may need to replace the one at left back and the one at centre half broke his leg which may fuck him up. Also out major long term is the ex Liverpool fella. 9 months. Bollocks.

Out at the first hurdle in both cups.

Next season will require a fairly major overhaul if we're going to do anything other than tread water, though the ground is now ours and we're upgrading our facilities. Premier League money should help shore up the squad, and I don't think I'll struggle to hang onto the players I want to keep. Just got to fuck off the players that I hate and hate me.

Well done surviving in the top flight in your first season. Good luck with the recruitment drive and hopefully consolidating a little higher above the tide line next season.

Doncaster Rovers - Premier League, 2026/27

I started my business off with a bit of a shock move. I flogged Cider for £13m in total to Bournemouth. That went down surprisingly well (though not so surprising that a couple of strikers were delighted). I also brought in a few experienced heads including a £10m signing of a quality midfielder from Blackburn through his relegation clause, a better keeper again and a few squad players.

I drew my first game, which was an instant improvement on last year's first nine games already... we also pushed City all the way in a 4-3 defeat, leading twice. First league win came at the end of August after three successive defeats, then we won every game in all competitions in September. Form held steady until we won one of a possible nine in the league in the run up to Christmas, which was a bit worrying.

In January, a young Spanish striker came in along with a new centre half bought in from the Swedish league for £15m altogether, as well as a loanee from Arsenal to bolster my strikeforce. I fucked off a few of the Tunisians for decent cash, though a couple that didn't work out went out the door too. Also managed to snap up a former wonderkid from Real to play behind my strikers who knew a good set piece when he saw one. We became draw specialists in the back end of the season, and we were never ever in genuine danger which is a massive step forward for the club. Could and should have beat Liverpool on the final day of the season in a 4-4 draw, but we made another record high finish of 14th! Smile

Cups didn't quite suck arse as we made the semi final of the League Cup, losing on penalties to Boro who lost to City at Wembley. Spurs pumped us in FACR5, so that happened.

Next season I don't think I'll have anywhere near as much work on. We're expanding the ground (again), upgrading all facilities and investing in the youth level so we'll have a better academy and better toys for them to play with. I'm hoping for a bit higher midtable finish next year looking towards challenging for the top 7 the season after. Things are looking rosy in South Yorkshire. Oh and I didn't regret letting Cider go, he only scored one more goal than he did for us - grand total of 6 in the league.
