what does this entail?

Land management type stuff - scrub clearance, coppicing, path/step-building - on various sites administered by London Wildlife Trust. I haven't actually done it for a while as I've been quite ill, but should get back into it soon.

And you can live "working" that?

Just about... thank heavens for the cheap entertainment that is FM Mrgreen

Once I was climbing Slieve Donard and there were two blokes putting in a stone path and stairs for the hikers. Seemed terrible work, and all three times I was up there it was raining in the clouds.

Welome aboard Kev. Tom's just trying to get some of the lurkers to say hello. You are very welcome.

You'll be the first referee ever to grasp football tactics when you get some success Wink

Accountant? I guess someone has to be.....

I work exclusively U19 and below games (there are no open age leagues within a 2 hour drive of my home). I spend most of my time refereeing thinking one of three phrases.

1. Pass it now!
2. Shoot it now!
3. Use your left foot!

Invariably, they take take two touches too many. It can be quite frustrating.

The other occupational hazard of being a referee here in the States is the assume we want to manage as well.

Here we're assumed to be the only one's who know anything about the game in the first place.

True story: When I was 9 I came home from school and told my mom I wanted to play soccer football in the local league. She didn't know what it was.

Welcome Kev. GREAT NAME!

Every credit working with the youngsters. Any ambitions to referee professionaly?
100 years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like; but the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child.

I volunteer coach in NW Ohio. Therefore I hate you Wink
No really, welcome to the board. Another American that loves a sport other than football (American) is nice.
Do you support the Crew then?

I don't work a game if I'm not getting paid! Wink Seriously, though it's 170 miles one way to the nearest city with a good enough league for me to move up referee ranks (you are limited by the quality of the leagues you work). So I'm basically stuck at the bottom of the referee grades.

I'm first and foremost an Arsenal supporter. I started as a Chicago Fire supporter back when the league started and since the Crew really aren't much closer I haven't really changed allegiance.

Welcome Eastshire and it is good to see a yank with taste (Go the Gunners!). I am the Team Manager for my son's U13 team and usually end up as the Assistant Referee (Linesman), so you have my full support Thup

Welcome Kevin. My last boss was an ex-Football League ref who still did youth games, he was very intelligent and knowledgeable about football.

In the past I've played Warhammer Fantasy. Most recently I've played Flames of War which is WWII in 15mm. Not much time for it lately though due to football.

Ah the dreaded Games Workshop rules of not being allowed to play unless your army was painted . . . my mates and I used to have a saying . . . "Undercoat is a paint/colour" . . . so just assemble them and hit them with a can of Tayima flat acrylic light grey and away you go Smile

Isn't a GW rule any more that I know of. I don't set foot inside their stores anyway. My local nerd shop is in Penrith, which makes it twice as good because I can visit the GF on my way there Mrgreen

I personally hate playing with undercoated or shiny metal. Plus I paint slow so playing with fully painted armies is still a while off Mrgreen
