On the old rag with 4 divisions loaded had less than half a star for estimated game speed, now on 15+ loaded have almost 4!

EDIT: Core Temp 1.0 RC5. How correct are these programs that measure the Core temperature?

I use Speedfan and tested it against a cheapo thermometer; speedfan usually had the temperature 2-4 degrees higher than the thermometer, but there were no massive differences.

Cheers Daedalus. Was asking cause in the future planing some overclocking. Have cooler more than capable for that and the guy who sold me the CPU (Core 2 duo @ 2.66) said he was running it @ 3.4GHz, 24/7 and temperature wasn't going over 45 C.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but my USB memory stick isn't showing up on my laptop and I don't quite know why. Any ideas?

Try restarting your laptop, that works for me sometimes.

Okay, serious answer time Mrgreen

When you plug in the USB does it make the bing-bong noise as if it's recognised the USB drive being inserted? If it does, open Windows Explorer, right click on Computer, and select Manage (Win 7) and click on disk management (under Storage) down the left side. It might tell you more about an issue there.

It does, and I did that, had a quick look on google which said to uninstall the driver and then put the drive back in for it to automatically reinstall. The only signs of life are the noise and the thing you right click to safe-remove. No sign of it showing up in 'Computer' and no autorun pop up thing either.

Does the drive work when you put it in another computer or device?

How familiar are you with command prompt? You could load that and check for the disk in there...

It works on my other laptop fine, so I don't get why not on this one. Unfortunately the other doesn't have Microsoft Word on...

Haven't got a clue how to use that, might have to stick to emailing it to myself from my other computer.

Any help with this problem would be appreciated...

My step-grandson put a toy through my wife's laptop screen, so I logically bought a replacement screen to replace it. The screen wasn't the right one - LED/LCD converter or some such - so I returned it and got the right one (ie with the adapter) but it still failed to work. All of which leads me to think that the little circuit board (driver?) that the wires plug into may have shorted out.

So...

Given that I don't want to keep buying replacement parts for the laptop which aren't going to guarantee success I'm wondering if I might be better buying a second hand laptop and switching the hard disks? Is that even possible? Ultimately, there's nothing other than the data on the hard disk that's worth keeping - the laptop is nothing special.

What to do?
