Mandaric has said that Megson was the only manager to make him money because of the compensation he received

Quote:Sheffield Wednesday have appointed former West Bromwich Albion and Bolton boss Gary Megson as their new manager.

The 51-year-old has agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract and again links up with Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric, whom he worked under at Leicester City.

Megson replaces Alan Irvine, who left Hillsborough on Thursday with the Owls lying 12th in League One.

"I am delighted with this appointment because Gary is a top drawer manager," Mandaric told the club website.

"He has tremendous experience in the Championship and the Premiership and that is where Sheffield Wednesday needs to be.

You should have seen the press conference, he had a massive dig at Bolton fans, just got home and put Sky Sports News on, he done the same talking to their reporter.
Not bitter at all then Gary?

On the positive side however if Megson does not perform at Hillsborough it has got to be his last job in management surely.

I consider Wednesday to be a big club - why on earth have they hired Megson? Could they really not do better?

Roberto Di Matteo has been sacked by West Brom Confused

I have to say that I'd love to see him as a Villa manager in the future.

What?! That has an air of madness to it. They were never going to challenge for Europe were they? And survival is very much within their reach.

I think slipping from comfortable top 10 to just above the drop may have had something to do with it

It's crazy though. It's so close down there that a win would propel them up a few places. I think he's earned the right to have a relegation once, too, if it came to it.

Given that last season was his first in charge and WBA got promoted it's got to be his first poor run as well?

It's not quite as bad as Blackburn removing Allardyce or Newcastle chopping Hughton, but it's a strange decision still.

Dudley born Allardyce to West Brom, then?

I can see that pov, but where were WBA expected to finish this season? Bottom 3? Just above the bottom 3? They're pretty much where they would expect to be imo. What makes it look worse is that they're on a bad run after starting the season well, but if you shuffled their results rather than looking at the runs in isolation they're getting a point a game which is pretty much on course for narrow relegation/survival at the end of the season.

Is anyone else going to any better now that the transfer window is shut?

I just find it odd that a popular, seemingly talented young manager is given the boot after one bad run having performed well last season and started this one pretty well.

I was thinking about this over lunch (I really need to get a life Meh) and I hope they give it to Roy Hodgson. It would be another chance to build at a small club for him, something he seems suited to.

This is an odd decision, certainly not one that the fans have demanded. It is unusual for the Baggies board to sack a manager for not performing in the Premiership. They would have kept Mowbray on had he not left to go to Celtic (before being sacked) and Megson was also kept on in 2002 (getting them up again in 2004). The timing is strange, did the board really view the game away to Citeh as winnable? Di Matteo does seem to be a good young manager with footballing values so one wonders whether there is more to this story.

I can't see Big Sam going to WBA unless the board are willing to sell their past footballing principles and anyway I thought Sam was coveting the Real Madrid or Milan jobs!
