Football Confeds Cup

Well, it's underway, this world cup dry run of infrastructure and logistics... Oh and some football too.

Brazil started by thumping Japan 3-0 which will annoy the japs given that they're a better side than that effort suggests.

Can't wait to see how the team of schoolteachers and plumbers from Tahiti gets on against some of these sides...

So the Tahita team will either have leather elbow patches or they'll be showing their arses

Turns out the full time job of one of the Tahiti players is climbing trees to cut down coconuts. I'm not even kidding.

Half time coconuts anyone?

Or to borrow from Dodgeball; "if you can head a coconut, you can head a soccer ball"?

Have Australia moved out of the Oceania Zone? How did Tahiti qualify for this comp? Who did they beat, New Zealand?

Did they not move to the Asia federation? Seem to remember reading that somewhere.

I think Tahiti struggled to overcome a team of elderly Japanese soldiers stranded after WWII in the Solomon Islands. T'was a close game I believe, with some dispute over passports and residency issues........

Australia has moved to Asian Federation, official reason is that it is a better competition to keep us sharp. Real reason is because the qualification path for the WC is simplier and more straight forward. Strongest team in Oceania is now NZ and funny enough they made the world cup finals in South Africa through the qualification path that us Aussies had complained was too hard and convoluted.

Australia leaving means Oceania also has a chance to develop as a more even competition... Teams like Solomon Islands now get closer and closer to NZ level without fearing thumpings from us for no reward at the end, because we'd always win those tournaments.

Personally I'd like to see Asia East and Asia West, but I don't think FIFA would like to see Asia given that much power...

Agree with the idea of train smashing AFC and OFC and having West Asia FC and East Asia FC instead Thup

Asia could well overtake S America in the next 50 years IMO. S America is a joke of terrible domestic competitions, violence, governmental involvement, bribery, cheating and a one way system of talent drain.
100 years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like; but the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child.

This would be the same mighty side that just beat all powerful Iran 1-0 to make the World Cup Finals Fishing

That's the most impressive performance from Neymar I've seen yet. Signs of a real player there.

Also, is Gary Lineker using/advertising Just for Men? His hair doesn't seem quite as grey these days...
