Overview

Since it gained independence from the soviet states in 1991, the no.1 sport in Belarus, soccer, has been governed by The Belarus Football Federation. They take part in all competitions organized by FIFA and UEFA at senior, women’s and youth level.

Belarusian First League

This league is the lowest playable league in Belarus and consists of 16 teams who play each other twice between early April and November. The winner gains promotion to the Highest League. The 2nd placed team qualifies for a 2 leg promotion Playoff against the team finishing 2nd bottom of the Highest League and the winner spends the next season in the Highest League. The bottom 2 teams are relegated.

Some things to note for this league: The bad news is that no foreign players are allowed at this level. the good news, however, is that 4 of the 7 named substitutes can be used.

Belarusian Highest League

This league is the highest playable league in Belarus and consists of 12 teams who play each other three times between early April and November.

The winner qualifies for the European Champions Cup Champions 1st Qualifying Round and the Belarus Super Cup. 2nd and 3rd placed teams qualify for the Euro Cup 2nd Qualifying Round and the team in 4th qualifies for Euro Cup 1st Qualifying Round (depending on the winner of the Belarusian Cup). The bottom team is relegated and the team in 11th enters a 2 legged Playoff Final with the 2nd placed team in the First league. The winner spends the next season in the Highest League.

Some things to note for this league: 5 foreign players are allowed in the squad but only 4 are to be used in the first 11. The substitions are back to normal for this league, allowing 3 of the 7 named substitutes to be used.

Belarusian Cup

There 6 rounds including the final, the first 3 rounds taking place between June and September. The 4 th round however, continues in March the following year just before the beginning of the new season.

1st round starts end of June and includes First League teams. Extra time and penalties if the game finishes level. 2nd round includes Highest League teams and the same rules apply as the 1st round.

3rd, 4th and Semi-final ties are decided over 2 legs adn the same rules apply if scores are level after the two matches. The 6th Round is the Final and takes place sometime in mid-May.

The winner qualifies for the Belarus Super Cup.

Belarus Super Cup

This match is a straight Fianl between the winner of the Highest League and the winner of the Belarusian Cup. Extra time and penalties if scores are level after 90 mins.
